18 Dec The perfect spots to enjoy a picnic & pretzel in Perth
Perth experiences sunny days almost all year round, and this time of the year is no exception. It’s one of the reasons why we love living in Perth.
With the silly season in full swing and the weather in full bloom, why not take your Christmas festivities outdoors? To help you decide where to go, we’ve curated our top picnic spots and things to do in Perth.
It’s a favourite with Perth locals and a must see attraction for tourists, with some of the best panoramic views you’ll get of the city.
You’ll never be short of a patch of green to roll out a blanket – just take your pick amongst 17 hectares of stunning native flora and endless attractions to explore.
For the kids there are heaps of playgrounds sprawled throughout the grounds including Synergy Parkland, Lotterywest Family Area, Saw Avenue Picnic Area, May Drive Parkland, Pines Picnic Area and Naturescape. All of these aside from Naturescape have free BBQ facilities, with some locations also operating kiosks and cafes.
Top tip: Be sure to download a map from their website to check out the hot spots.
South Perth foreshore
For a different view of Perth city, head to the South Perth foreshore – with so much green open space you’ll be wishing this was your own backyard!
You’ll find playgrounds and BBQ facilities along Sir James Mitchell Park near Coodes Street and Mends Street, along with a mouth-watering selection of cafes and restaurants along Mends Street and Mill Point Road.
For a snack, we like to grab our favourite pretzels from our pink container in Northbridge, then take a ferry ride from Elizabeth Quay to Mends St Jetty, and set up camp for the day for some relaxing time in the sun. Plus you’re only a short walk from Perth Zoo.
Top tip: Jump on a bike and hit the cycle path to enjoy amazing views of the Swan River and Perth CBD.
You can’t live in Perth and not picnic at the beach. We’ll be biased and say Mullaloo Beach – just a 5 minute drive from our pink Pretzel container at Westfield Whitford City is our top pick.
Aside from being a popular swimming beach, the facilities and playgrounds are great, and if you’re in the mood for some fish and chips or a cold bevvy, then Mullaloo Beach Hotel will take care of that for you.
Top tip: If you love to surf, the northern end of Mullaloo is the best, as it’s where the waves are usually the highest and produce a right-hand surf break along Mullaloo Point.
If you’re up for a day trip then pack a picnic (and some pretzels), and venture out a little further to Serpentine National Park, roughly a 1 hour drive from Perth city. There’s a number of picturesque bush walks you can tackle, and if you’re like many visitors, you’ll want to take a dip in the cool rock pool afterwards.
With plenty of grassy picnic areas, shady picnic tables and BBQ facilities available – you’re set for a fun sunshiny day.
Top tip: Make sure you plan to get there before 10am. Due to the popularity of this area, if visitor numbers reach maximum capacity you may be refused entry.
For us, a picnic just isn’t the same without our delicious pretzels to share, so don’t forget to swing by one of our stores before you head out this festive season to enjoy the sunshine. We’re open 7 days a week.
