What not to miss at Perth Fringe World Festival 2019

The start of the year can only mean one thing – festival season has arrived, and Perth’s main summer attraction – Fringe World is back again for 4 phenomenal weeks of live comedy, cabaret, film, dance, music and theatre until 17 February.

There’s nothing we love more in Perth (after our pretzels of course), than getting amongst what is now the third largest fringe festival in the world.

No matter what your age, you’ll find something that tickles your fancy, across 700 events made up of local homegrown heroes, national and international acts sprawled across 138 venues.

Here are Pretzel Perth’s top picks of what to see during the fest.

Dali Land at Metro City

Step into the immersive 4 level exhibition, taking you on a journey into the mind and life of Salvador Dali. Featuring over 200 works including drawings, sculptures, film, photography and a virtual reality experience. While you’re there check out Unconscious Contemporary, a secondary exhibition by contemporary surrealist and esoteric artists alongside historical work by Max Ernst, Jean Cocteau and Man Ray.

A Midnight Visit at Girls School

Get ready for an experience like no other. Part choose-your-own-adventure, part film-set, part playground; A Midnight Visit will have you enter a dark dreamworld with Lizzie Reid – the Girl School’s most troubled young ghost. Watch your step as you meander through the corridors and rooms, where you’ll encounter peculiar characters, impressive and gruesome scenes inspired by Edgar Allan Poe.

Rest

Keeping up with the spooky, Rest at East Perth Cemeteries is another immersive experience that’ll have you exploring a space never open after dark, with stories hidden in the graveyards.

Boys Taste Better With Nutella

We love Nutella on our pretzels, but we also can’t wait to check out the show that everyone’s been raving about. Winner of Best Production, Best Script & Best Actor at Short+Sweet Festival, Boys Taste Better with Nutella will have you in stitches as Aggy and Frederick delve into their world of past relationships, with hilarious observations, cheesy dance moves, and of course who could forget the hazelnut spread!

Le Aerial

Head to the Edith Speilgeltent at Yagan Square for Le Aerial, where you’ll be thrilled by this spectacular display of high flying, high energy acrobatics from some of Australia’s leading gymnasts, divers and dancers. 2018 was a sell out, so make sure you get your tickets early.

Stand-up comedy

It’s hard to single out one comedy act, but if Perth’s 2018 sell out shows are any indication, then that’s where we’re heading. On our must see list includes:

  • Dr Ahmed in Cabaret Consultations
  • Comedy hypnotist Matt Hale in his show Feel Good Factory
  • Joe White returns with a new show Ethiopian and Still Not Hungry
  • Josh Glan – voted Best Comedy Fringe World 2017 also returns with his Karma Karma Karma Karma Karma Chamedian and Glanc You for Having Me shows

Not sure what to see? Check out City of Perth Fringe Fridays at Forrest Place Twilight Hawkers Market, or Fringe Sundays at Yagan Square for a free taste of some of the best shows across the Fringe.

If you’re in Northbridge enjoying the mammoth line up of entertainment, come by our pretzel palace on James Street before or a after a show. We’ll be serving up our usual pretzel goodness throughout the festival season.
